Southern Trip Day 3 - Dubbo Zoo

So today we left Copeton early, and it was a wee bit chilly to say the least.

We drove a backway to Narrabri, which was really lovely, we were the only car on the road.

From there we followed the Newell Highway for a while with a few pit stops and detours on the way.

One of our pit stops was to ‘The Dish’ at Forbes.  When we pulled up the dish was moving, which was quite a spectacular site.

Cheeky Monkeys

How COOL!

We wandered around the grounds and came across two smaller dishes which were facing each other but were about 80 meters apart.  The sign next to one of them advised to stand facing the centre of the dish, get another person to stand facing the other one.  You then whispered into the centre of the dish and it could be heard clearly from 80 meters away!!!!  It totally blew us away.  You really have to try it to believe it.  There was some scientific explanation as to how sound could travel from one dish as you whispered but I didn’t get into that.  (I do wonder however if some geeky scientists set up a microphone and a speaker to suck in naive tourists like us….).

Going to The Dish has made us want to watch the movie again!

Anyway, from there we headed to Dubbo to go to the Zoo.  We got there in time to have a few hours to look around (and given that Finn has been crook with a head cold since we left home, that was all he had in him the poor possum).  We had the option of driving our car through the zoo, but would have had to leave the camper in the carpark.  So rather than faff about un-hitching we decided to hire an electric car.  It was soooo fun!  Finn kept referring to it as ‘The Ride’, so when we would stop at an animal exhibit he would ask “when can we go back to our ride?”.  He ended up being more excited about the car than the animals!!!! Go figure!

Our Ride

The zoo was really well set out and we were really impressed with the animal enclosures, they seemed really roomy and practical.  We found it funny to see wild rabbits hopping about in some enclosures – we wondered if they found out the hard way which enclosures they should enter????? I’d steer clear of the lions and tigers if I were them!

There was an Australian exhibit at the zoo which we went into, you could pat the wallaby’s and there were emu’s walking around – Finn was not that impressed, because we have just had all of that right around our camper at Copeton, he did have a point :).

We ended up staying in a caravan park at Dubbo, it was nice, although after being in the middle of the bush for the last two nights it was pretty noisy as we were  on the highway.

Anyway we are headed to a free camp somewhere south of Tumut tomorrow.

Cheers Shae, Shan and Finn.
