Day 5: Still Eungella Dam

So after I wrote last night’s blog we had a brush tail possum come and visit us and eat the bread we put our earlier for the birds, it was pretty cool.  Though, unfortunately Finn was already in bed so he missed out.

You may recall that I said yesterday that we bought fire wood….well it is no good, it is ‘Eco’ hippy crap basically and doesn’t burn very well at all!  Luckily we still had enough ‘real wood’ to get us through.

This morning while we were eating breakfast we had an interesting visitor, a horse!  Yes that’s right a horse, he simply came marching around the car and right into our camp, as in under the awning and hung around the kitchen.  Stupidly we thought if we fed him he would go away, well not really but we thought he might wander off.  Finn tried to entice him into our camper, but thankfully the horse declined.

we obviously still haven't picked up a card reader - otherwise there would be a picture of the horse here!

After we got rid of our ‘guest’ we got ready for a kayak to try to catch some fish.  It has been a beautiful day and we were lucky on the water that there was not much wind or anything.  We had in total (or should I say I had in total, Shan was being a gentleman and let me catch the fish while he entertained Finn), 2 hook-ups, 1 landed and another 2 hits.  Which we thought was pretty successful given that we were in a kayak with a 3 year old and only on the water for about 2 hours.  We realised when we were on our way back that the trip would have been even more successful if I had decent treble hooks on my lure – one of the hooks snapped off and the others were a bit rusty – I don’t think Shan wanted me to out do him too much.

When we got back to camp we had lunch and went for a walk, then had hot showers, our shower annexe is awesome, as is our hot water system.

On our walk we realised that kids don’t need half the stuff we (or grandparents!) buy then, Finn has been so happy simply being in the outdoors and with a stick in hand you would think he had everything he ever needs.

We decided to get ahead and packed the shower up after we had all finished, and low and behold along came our horse friend again.  This time he was more persistent and interested in everything.

He followed Shan around and poked his head in everywhere, the car, the kitchen, in Finn’s face.

It got to the point we didn’t want to prepare any food in case he never left.  We thought maybe if we start the fire he will leave, well NO.  I think he was ready to settle in for the night, all nice and cozy.

This was the horses reaction when we said "no more food for you Buddy"............"ok then just one more carrot", no wonder he wouldnt go away, he spotted us suckers a mile away!

Finally he left and we were able to prepare dinner.

Shan horsing around in Finn's hat, pardon the pun.

All in all it has been a really relaxing and enjoyable stay.  If it were just Shan and I or if Finn was a bit bigger we would have fished harder, but it is after all a family holiday….oh and  I caught a Sooty Grunter so I am not going to complain!

Shan and Finn have just gone off on a ‘bug hunt’ and I now see torches in the distance so I may just go and join them.

I really wonder what is on TV right now……NOT!  This is the best experience, and we are so enjoying it.

Till tomorrow
