We left Eungella Dam
this morning.
We decided to be
proactive and pack up most of our ground gear last night, which proved to be a
great idea. We pretty much got up
this morning and packed up the camper and were on the road.
When we got going Shan
and I were discussing all the crazy noises we heard during the night, and by
heard, I mean herd! A herd of
Brahman cattle went past our camper really early this morning. Until we discussed it I thought I had
dreamt it.
So anyway, on the road
again, it was sad to leave Eungella as it was so nice and peaceful. We were one of only 3 campers in the
whole place.
On our travels today
we had to stop and pick up some tools as our Anderson Plug had broken on the
drive up the range to Eungella, we decided to call in to Airlie Beach. It is honestly one of our favourite
places, so pretty – and when you know what the fishing has to offer (because
you have experienced it first hand, and you are a hard core fisho) it is also
more appealing, though not from a Kayak.
That is where the hard compromise comes into play, we see places like
that and wish our boat was on the back, then you go to places like Eungella and
Carmila and are thankful the camper is on the back with the Kayak on the
roof……wow ‘first world’ problems :p
After we got what we
needed we headed to Alligator Creek, I had to book our site via National Parks,
and when I was on the website I picked site 8 as the web indicated the site was
14 metres x 7 metres tent area, we only have a car and a camper so I thought
‘beauty’!
On our way out to Alligator
Creek we passed a camper trailer, it was 3:30 in the arvo so we thought that
was strange they were leaving then, and I joked “maybe they don’t fit in the
camp spot, cos we booked the biggest”!
Well……we get to the
Alligator Creek camping area and are so excited, there is a beautiful creek and
wallabies just cruising around everywhere. We couldn’t wait to get to site 8 and set up……..site 8
turned out to be a total flop!
It was so narrow and not long enough for our trailer and car, let alone
if we set up the camper (which is an extra 2.5 meters or so).
Now I was pissed off,
you see I am ACTUALLY quite spatially aware, so when I booked the site I
thought we were home and hosed, but no!
So we ended up being like the other poor souls who left the camp site at
3:30!
Shan and I had
discussions if I ‘read the site correctly’, see below a link to the site and
check out the dimensions for site 8……
Anyway, we decided
that we would forego our $10.90 National Park booking fee (I bet that is how
they make their money – understate the size of the sites and people have to
leave!).
We have ended up at a
Big 4 caravan park north of Townsville, and feel like we are letting ourselves
and our Australian Off Road Camper down, it should be off road, not at a
powered site!
Though the hot
showers and toilets and power are a nice prize, I was able to charge the laptop
after all!
So here we are,
sitting beside the highway, with the noise of trucks, like the trailer trash we
truly are! Lol, actually it isn’t that bad. We are off to my brother, Brent’s place, tomorrow and will
have two nights out of the camper at his place before we go to Tinaroo dam with
Brent and his wife Leigh. We cant
wait.
So till tomorrow,
The Wanderin’ Watson’s
